Early Bronaugh Residents

Monroe Family

This family was in Bronaugh very early and were featured in the 1887 History of Vernon County. We hope to learn more about them.

From: History of Vernon County, Missouri. 1887, p. 801.

KENNETH MONROE

(Farmer, Post-office, Bronaugh).

Both by birth and bringing up, as indeed by ancestry, also, Mr. M. is a typical Scotchman, and to say this is to indicate to considerable extent the kind of man he is. Upright, honorable and progressive, his entire career has been an active one, not without the substantial evidence of success. He was born in Rosshire, Scotland, October 11, 1832, the youngest of a family of five children. Thomas Monroe, his father, was a native of Scotland and by trade a boot and shoe manufacturer. -He died at his old home in 1871, having been preceded to the grave a few months by his wife, whose maiden name was Margaret McKay. Kenneth as he grew towards youth and manhood became familiar with the trade of blacksmith and machinist, an occupation in which he established himself firmly. June 12. 1857, he married Miss Isabella Macarthur, of Nairnshire, Scotland, who was born in October, 1836. Starting for America the same year of their marriage this young couple first lived at Elmira, N. Y., going thence to Upper Canada, where Mr. Monroe was in the employ of the Great Western Railroad for three years. His uncle, Elder John Monroe, had early located in Cooper county, Mo., where he was known as the celebrated pioneer Methodist preacher, and thither our subject wended his way, settling in this State in April, 1860. Subsequently he became engaged in the employ of a manufacturing firm in Boone County, but about a year later owing to war troubles he commenced farming in Cooper County, where increased difficulties were met with, until finally he joined Jackman’s brigade, of Shelby’s division, of the Confederate army. He was among the last to surrender at Shreveport, after which, upon returning to his home in Cooper County, he found all of his property destroyed. After remaining there two years occupied in farming he settled in this county and township and has improved two places during his residence here. One of these, the place on which he now resides, embraces 320 acres of land, and is well managed and improved. Mr. Monroe’s intelligence and fitness for official positions have long been recognized in this locality, as they were in other places where he has resided. Well informed on general topics, and possessed of an education above the average, he is also a good Latin scholar and has done considerable law practice hereabouts. In 1886 he made the race for county judge, but was defeated. In 1879 he was a delegate to a county convention called the railroad tax league. Personally he is worthy of the esteem which is accorded him, for losing sight of self, he warmly supports all interests tending to advance or benefit the county. Mrs. Monroe’s parents were Alexander and Elsie (McKenzie) Macarthur, natives of Nairnshire, Scotland, where the former was public contractor for years. He died in 1880 and his wife in 1878. They had a family of ten children. Mr. and Mrs. Monroe have nine children: Margaret A., wife of John T. Overton, of Nevada; Alexander, Christina Lee, John T., Eliza J., Rosetta, Elsie, Cora and Lauchlin.

The above County history was written in 1887. The Monroe's were among the earlier settlers of the area that became Bronaugh. The Monroe family appeared in the 1880 federal census for Moundville Township demonstrating that they lived in the area several years before Bronaugh was founded:

Terri Lynn Pendleton Sanday shared photos and information on her Monroe ancestors:

Kenneth Monroe died February 12, 1921. His death certificate listed his birth date as October 11, 1833 in Iverness, Scotland, son of Thomas Monroe. He was age 87 at the time of his death. Occupation was listed as retired lawyer and he and Isabella lived at 202 E. Ashland in Nevada at the time of his death. He was buried on Febuary 14 at Deepwood Cemetery and the undertaker was Turpin's.

Kenneth had written his will in 1920 and left his belongings to his widow, Isabella and after her death, his property was to be equally divided among his children, Margaret Overton, Alex Monroe, Christine Monroe, John Monroe, Laughlin Monroe, Eliza Monroe and Rosetta Monroe. His daughter, Essie Monroe was to receive the sum of ten dollars. Essie was at the State Hospital.
