Mische Family of Moundville

This family lived east of Moundville (Drywood Township) very early and were featured in the 1887 History of Vernon County. We hope to learn more about them.

From History of Vernon County, Missouri. 1887, p. 835.

HENRY MISCHE

(Farmer, Section 6, Post-office, Milo).

Mr. Mische comes of sturdy German parentage, and all through his career has manifested those sterling characteristics peculiar to that race of people. Indeed he himself is a German by birth, having been born in Germany, September 6, 1831. Henry Mische, his father, was a successful farmer, and his mother was Lettie Mische, of the same country. Among the children born to them was he whose name heads this sketch. Henry Mische was brought up at his old home to a farm experience, but when 18 years old he left the scenes of his boyhood days and early manhood and took passage for America, finally settling in Warren county, 0., where he lived until 1881. Then he took up his location in this county, and from that time to this has been steadily identified with the agricultural interests of the community. His nicely improved farm of 340 acres is well carried on and produces bountifully under his careful toil and management. In 1860 Mr. Mische was first married to Christiana Hassenjager, of Germany, who died in 1872, leaving the following children: Caroline, now Mrs. Kuhlmann; Ann, wife of Henry Kuhlmann; Alvina, Mena. and Henry. In 1873 Mr. K. married his present wife, Miss Mena Woltemeyer, and seven children have blessed this union: Amanda, Benjamin, Charlie, Matilda, August, Martin and Frank.

Ruth Mische notes that the 1887 History does include some errors. She said that Henry Mische settled in Warren County, MO (not Ohio) and was followed by two brothers, a sister and father. His mother was Lucia, and his second wife (Ruth's grandmother) was Wilhemine Woltemar, known as Mina.

Henry Mische participated in the Civil War. The 1890 Veteran's Census for Warren County, MO, tells that he had enlisted as a private in Company C of the 49th Missouri Infantry on August 31, 1864. He was discharged on August 2, 1865.

The 1870 Warren County Census showed Henry with first wife Christine

In the same census for Warren County, 15 year old Wilhemina Woltemar was living with her parents Simon and Mina Woltemar.

Christine Wilhelmine Hasenjaeger Mische died June 13, 1872, leaving Henry with five small children. Christine died just 10 days after Friedrich Robert Mische died on June 3, 1872. He was not yet two years old. They are both buried in the Mische Homestead Cemetery in Warren County. In 1873, 42 year old Henry Mische married 18 year old Wilhemina Woltemar.

The 1880 Warren County Census shiowed Henry with second wife Mina.

The first five children were from the first wife and the last four listed are from the second wife. More children were born after 1880.

It appears that Henry Mische's father died in 1881. There is a burial in Lippstadt Cemetery in Warren County for a Heinrich Mische, born 1796 and died June 28, 1881.

Ruth Mische tells that Henry and Mina Mische came to Vernon County in 1881 after buying land in Drywood Township (120 acres) and 40 acres in Moundville Township, later buying land (about 200 acres) on both sides of Little Drywood. They never lived in Moundville or Moundville Towhship (however, some attended the Lutheran Church in Moundville). In the early years, their post office was Milo but later was Rt. 4, Nevada and that area is now Rt. 3, Nevada.

The 1900 census shown below shows the family living in Drywood Township in Vernon County, MO where they remained the rest of their lives.

The 1920 Vernon County, Drywood Township census showed Mina as a widow. Emma, Daniel and David still lived with her.

The 1930 Vernon County, Drywood Township census showed 75 year old Mina living with her daughter and family, Tilda and William Prewitt.

Henry and Mina are buried at Bicket Cemetery:

Steve Burrows, a great great grandson of Henry Mische shared this photo of the Henry Mische family. He identifies the folks as:

Fourth row (men): Martin, Ben, Henry, Charlie, August

Third Row (women): Tilda, Hulda, Minne, Winnie

Second row: Annie, Henry, Mina, Carrie

Bottom Row: Emma, David, Daniel, Amanda

Mr. and Mrs. Mische are buried at Bickett Cemetery along with their Kuhlman daughters:

Henry had a death certificate filed. However, it listed his parents as unknown. The informant was his son Ben.

Mina's death certificate lists her parents as Simon and Minnie Tracht Woltemar.

Vic and Sharon Fengler Hinds shared this image which appears to have been taken the same day minus the table with a couple folks moved around.

Some hand written identifications on the front may not be quite in agreement with the names above. A separate hand written note with this image says that Carl's mother Winnie Kuhlman is 5th from left. Ben is sixth from left. Dan is 4th from left and Caroline is 2nd right from Henry Mische (that would be the one that has Emma written on her front).

Descendants may want to discuss this so we can post for sure who is who.

This photo is labeled "Huldah, Tilda and Emmie Mische"

The calling card from Annie Mische is from the Heinsohn family collection. Perhaps, this card was printed before Ann Mische became Mrs. Henry Kuhlman?

The Victorian decoration below the calling card is just an example of they type of things that were with the calling cards. Such items were common in the late 1800's.

Katarine Wilhelmine Amanda (Mische) DAHMER, and her husband, Sampson Matthew DAHMER. This is believed to be their wedding picture. They were married in Mar 1902. She was a daughter of Arend Heinrich Mische. By the way......Katarine Wilhelmine Amanda (Mische) DAHMER was Steve's great grandmother.

Steve also shared the scan to the left is of Katarine Wilhelmine Amanda (Mische) DAHMER, and 3 of her children (Malinda Mary, Clara Jane, & Ruth Mae). It was taken by their home, that was located south of Nevada, MO. Katarine Wilhelmine Amanda (Mische) Dahmer, was a daughter of Arend Heinrich (Henry) & Wilhemine (Woltemar) MISCHE.
